ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture has been used for centuries to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction and to prevent homeostatic disturbances. It is a very safe and effective method of treatment and is often used in place of medications and surgery or as an adjunct to chiropractic care and physiotherapy. Very fine needles are inserted at specific points in the body along lines called meridians. Most patients only feel minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted. Differing sensations may be felt with the treatment from relaxation to a dull aching. It stimulates the nervous system to put the body's natural mechanisms of healing and self-regulation into action. Insertion of the needles causes local tissue changes as well as multi-system responses by stimulating the body to produce pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins. This treatment decreases pain and inflammation, promotes tissue healing and neurological balance, restores range of motion, and muscle strength. Some musculoskeletal conditions that acupuncture can be used for include: - low back and neck pain
- osteoarthritis
- tennis/golfer's elbow
- shoulder pain
- carpal tunnel
- headache
- sciatica
- tendonitis and ankle sprain
- Other common uses include
- addictions
- digestive
- respiratory
- menstrual
- reproductive disorders
There are very few side effects associated with this treatment.Bruising, mild bleeding and minimal discomfort are most commonly experienced. Infection can be avoided with the use of sterile disposable needles. Other major adverse effects can be avoided with the use of a qualified practitioner. People with pacemakers, in early pregnancy and haemophiliacs should use caution with acupuncture. The number of treatments depends upon the condition. Treatments last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. The use of electro-acupuncture shortens treatment time through the stimulation of needles with electrical impulses. Patients may receive 1-2 treatments per week with the frequency decreasing as improvement occurs. Relief may be felt anywhere from immediately to a few days later.
