Chiropractic Questions & Answers......
What is Chiropractic?
This is one of the important Chiropractic Questions. Chiropractic is the science, art and philosophy that concerns itself with the restoration of good health by restoring and maintaining a properly functioning nervous system, without the use of drugs or surgery. Chiropractic procedures are directed at evaluating the causative factors in the biomechanical and structural dysfunction of the spine and extremities which can affect the nervous system and the body's natural defenses. A chiropractor will use a variety of examination methods, such as: - x-ray
- orthopaedic testing
- postural assessment
- neurological testing
- physical examination
- and history taking
All of this (x-ray may not be necessary)must be done in order to properly diagnose a patient's condition. A central premise of chiropractic is that abnormal joint motion or dysfunction in the spine and extremities produces interference in the function of the nervous system. This in turn, can impair an individual's health and performance. This abnormal joint motion is referred to in chiropractic as a subluxation or joint complex fixation. A second of the often asked chiropractic questions is: .
How Does a Subluxation or Joint Complex Fixation Happen (JCF)?
The stresses and strains of everyday living such as:
- housework
- gardening
- desk work
- lifting
- even sleeping
can cause subluxations. So can falls, accidents (especially car accidents)and sports activities and injuries. In children, subluxations can initially occur during the birth process, learning to walk, in play and from everyday childhood activities.
Another of the common chiropractic questions is:
What are some warning signs of Subluxations or JCF's?
Symptoms such as headaches, back pain, neck pain and stiffness, pain in your shoulders, arms or legs, numbness in your hands or feet, are the most common signs of subluxations. But like a tooth cavity, most people have a subluxation long before they notice any symptoms.
How are Subluxations or JCF's corrected?
They are corrected by highly skilled adjustments administered by a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.). If the subluxation has been present a short time, you may need only a few adjustments. However, long term, chronic subluxations will require more frequent adjustments to retrain the problem areas of the spine or extremities.
Chiropractic can benefit and may completely alleviate the following:
- Headaches, including migraine
- Numbness/Tingling in arms or legs
- Dizziness/Vertigo
- Upper, Middle or Lower Back Pain
- Shoulder, Elbow, Hand, Hip, Knee and Foot Pain
- Sports Injuries
- Tendonitis or Bursitis
- Carpal or Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
The chiropractic adjustment has been proven to increase coordination, increase circulation and reduce swelling, muscle spasm and pain.
Who Qualifies as a Doctor of Chiropractic?
Students seeking to become a Doctor of Chiropractic must obtain a baccalaureate degree in pre-med studies (minimum 3 years) at a university prior to admission into chiropractic school. Once accepted into chiropractic school, the student will endure four (4) years of intense study in anatomy, neurology, physiology, nutrition, and pathology.
I trust that this answers most of the common chiropractic questions that you have. If not, please feel free to contact me with your question. I would be more than pleased to respond to your question.
