Pain Relief

If you are suffering from pain, then pain relief becomes your number one priority.

Pain is pain no matter how you look at it.

Pain relief is often near at hand, but first lets look at what causes pain.

A painful back upon awakening is caused by the same mechanism as the pain caused by spraining your ankle. No matter where you hurt, it is the same nervous system response to injured tissue that causes the pain.

Almost every tissue in the body contains tiny, microscopic organs that sense tissue damage. These are called nociceptors (pronounced "nosee-septor"). A nociceptor is found in abdunance in your joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles.

Injuring your back picking up something heavy or injuring your neck in a car accident will cause damage to the muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints. Tissue damage in turn stimulates nociceptors causing a nervous system response creating pain, muscle spasm, inflammation, and multiple joint restrictions.

As you can see, pain is caused by the stimulation of nociceptors because of tissue injury. No where did you read that pain is caused by a "pinched nerve".

In actuality, "pinching" a nerve or nerve compression will cause numbness and tingling and/or muscle weakness, but NOT pain.

A very common misconception often heard in my office from new patients is the "bone-on-nerve" problem. What makes this misconception so popular is that it is easier for someone to visualize the nerve being interfered with by a bone than to visualize tiny, microscopic receptors.

Pain relief... and the role of Chiropractic

Chiropractors provide pain relief by dealing with patients who have pain caused by a muscle spasm, subluxation, torn ligament or tendon on a daily basis.

Chiropractors restore joint motion...

(NOT move a bone back into place)

and use ultrasound, electrical therapy or other modalities to reduce or eliminate pain.

Chiropractic is extremely effective for treatment of:

  • headaches
  • low back pain
  • neck pain
  • shoulder pain
  • elbow pain
  • hand pain
  • hip pain
  • knee pain
  • foot pain
  • carpal or tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • tendonitis or bursitis
